WHAT IS MASS SPECTROMETRY?
with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS)
Secure a clear and straightforward system for data acquisition and management for your laboratory and all subsequent work processes. But the Fink & Partner LIMS should not be just a central storage module for you. Your measurement data and results are processed with us as your partner in a multi-layered system with individual application possibilities and are available for archiving visualization, or further processing.
Especially in laboratories in which several analyses and examinations are carried out simultaneously, clarity and structure are two of the most essential working foreign exchange rates that must be observed.
Mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma – ICP-MS
Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is an excellent method of analysis. This method is very robust and, at the same time, susceptible and widely used in chemical elemental analysis. There it is mainly used for trace analysis of heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, or mercury.
The procedure of mass spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS)
In the course of the ICP-MS, an atomization process of the analyte takes place first. Ionized argon is induced by a very high-frequency current, and the sample of the analyte is heated to 5,000 up to 10,000 °C. The sample is then atomized, and the analyte is then heated to 5,000 up to 10,000 °C. The sample is then heated to a temperature of 10,000 °C. The sample is then heated to a temperature of 5,000 °C. This ionizes the atoms and creates a plasma. The ions generated in this plasma are now accelerated in the direction of the analyzer by an electric field. At this point, the individual elements and their isotopes are removed and measured.
With the ICP-MS, quantitative proofs in the range of nanograms per liter (ng/l) or better can be achieved for most elements of the periodic table. The list of orders of magnitude can be extended to up to nine further values in an extremely high linear range. This means that measurements and verifications are possible from grams/liter to picograms/liter. As already mentioned, not only the elements are measured, their isotopes are also recorded – this is how accurate isotope analysis can be carried out within the framework of ICP-MS. High-resolution ICP mass spectrometers are often used for this purpose.
Within the scope of coupling with some analytical separation methods such as high-performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, gel electrophoresis, ion-exchange chromatography, and field-flow fractionation, the ICP-MS analysis passages can also be used for speciation analysis. In addition, the study of solid samples can be made possible by direct coupling with an individual furnace for electrothermal evaporation or with a laser ablation device.
Application areas of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)
This very principle of coupling with a particular furnace or a laser ablation device also makes it possible to perform virtually non-destructive analytical processes on, for example, historical samples. However, qualitative, quantitative, and semi-quantitative elemental analysis are the main areas of application for ICP-MS. This analysis principle is also used for age determination of geological samples, for food analysis and authentication and for protein analysis. Other areas include the absolute and relative quantification of proteins and other bio-molecules, toxicological issues, forensic and clinical investigation, and quality assurance.
